Applying a legal and sociological perspective, the course examines: 1) the structure of the law and the criminal justice system; 2) the nature and causation of criminal behavior; and 3) the various types of crime and criminality.

Each state has its criminal justice system, and the Federal government has another still. This section considers how these various systems are composed by looking at the major components common to them all. Traditionally, the criminal justice system can be divided into three major components: Police, Courts, and Corrections.

The first of these models is the crime control model. This particular model asserts that protecting society and caring for the victims of crime is the first priority of the criminal justice system, which contrasts how they see the criminal justice system working now (Siegel, 2006, p. 476).
